On to Martinsville! Monarchs receive bid to NCAA Division III South Regionals

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – They had to wait until nearly the midnight hour, but the Methodist Monarchs officially received their bid to the 2004 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament late Sunday night. The Monarchs were placed in the South Regional, which will take place on May 20-23 at Hooker Field in Martinsville, Va.

Methodist (27-17) is seeded fifth in the sixth-team Regional. Emory (40-4) is the top-seeded team, followed by Salisbury (33-11), Virginia Wesleyan (31-10) and Mary Washington (29-10). York (28-16) is seeded sixth. The winner of the Regional advances to the NCAA Division III World Series on May 28-June in Appleton, Wis.

This is Methodist’s 21st trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament, and the 19th under head coach Tom Austin. The Monarchs’ last trip to the national tournament was in 2002. The Monarchs have advanced to the World Series in 1986, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 1996, and were National Runner-ups in 1995.
