Shenandoah Defeats Methodist 7-3

Monarchs' nine hits not enough against the Hornets

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Shenandoah came out swinging and gained an early lead over Methodist as they went on to take the 7-3 win. Methodist moves to 9-5 overall and 0-1 in the USA South while Shenandoah stands at 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The Hornets led off with a hit by pitch before stringing together three hits to take the 3-0 lead in the first inning. Methodist got out of a bases loaded situation in the top of the second before countering in the bottom of the inning when junior Dustin Proctor led off with a hit by pitch. Junior Kenly Locklear singled through the left side to move Proctor to second before senior Kyle Eudy's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Junior Brad Davis hit a single to center field to score both runners, moving Methodist to within one run.

Methodist had bases loaded in the third and let two runners on in the fourth, but it was Shenandoah that scored two runs in the top of the fifth on three hits. The Hornets snuck another run through in the eighth on two walks and a single for the 6-2 lead. Davis tried to get something going for Methodist in the bottom of the eight with a one-out single through the left side of the infield. He moved to second on a wild pitch before scoring on freshman Brian Inghram's single up the middle. Shenandoah recorded two more outs to leave Inghram stranded. Shenandoah scored another run in the ninth while not allowing a Methodist base runner to finish with the 7-3 win.

Locklear, Davis and Inghram each recorded two hits for Methodist while Elliott Bisplinghoff picked up the loss on the mound. Shenandoah's pitcher Greg Van Sickler went eight innings to earn his first collegiate victory.
