March 2, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Shenandoah took another early lead Sunday afternoon, but Methodist came back to win 6-5. Methodist moves to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the USA South while Shenandoah stands at 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Shenandoah struck first in the top of the third inning. Josh Simons singled through the left side and then with two outs, Scott Lambert hit a two-run home run down the left field line. Sophomore Brian Halpin got things going for the Monarchs in the bottom of the inning with a single to center field. Sophomore Seth Kivett walked and both runners advanced on a balk. Halpin scored on a wild pitch to cut the Hornets' lead to one run. Shenandoah scored again in the fourth on a RBI triple from Michael Goode and added another run on Lambert's sacrifice fly in the fifth for the 4-1 lead. The Monarchs pushed ahead in the bottom of the sixth when junior Kenly Locklear reached on a throwing error by the Hornets. Locklear stole second and junior Dustin Proctor walked before junior Billy Quinn hit one over the fence in right field to tie the game at four runs a piece. Junior Brad Davis laid down the bunt single to keep the rally going. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Davis gave Methodist the 5-4 lead after a passed ball. The Hornets came back and tied the game at five with an unearned run in the top of the seventh, but Methodist kept fighting back. In the bottom of the eighth, Davis walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Senior Scott Russell hit a two-out single through the left side to score Davis for the eventual game-winning run. Sophomore pitcher Alex Sholar retired the final three batters for Shenandoah to finish with two and two thirds innings pitched. He picked up the win after senior Chris Toth went six innings and freshman Jordan Ridenhour threw a third inning in relief. Quinn and Russell both had two hit games while Quinn led the team with three RBI. The Monarchs will be back at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Tuesday to face Alderson-Broaddus at 6 pm.
