Shenandoah Shuts Out Monarchs 4-0
Sophomore Kurt Kelly went seven and a third innings with seven strikeouts

WINCHESTER, VA— It seemed like it would be a battle of the pitchers early with the first four innings scoreless.  Shenandoah got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to win 4-0.  Methodist moves to 22-9 overall and 6-5 in the USA South while Shenandoah is 20-9 overall and 5-6 in the conference.

In the top of the fifth inning, Shenandoah pitcher Taylor DuFrene struck out his sixth consecutive Monarch and seventh of the game when junior Scott Russell broke the drought and recorded the first hit for Methodist with a single to right field.  Sophomore Brad Davis was hit by a pitch to advance Russell to second, but two runners were stranded after DuFrene's eighth strikeout and a fielder's choice by sophomore Dustin Proctor.

The Hornets scored in the bottom of the fifth on two hits to take the 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the seventh, David Divine homered to left field for his fourth home run in two games this week.  The Hornets went on to score two additional runs in the eighth inning while the Monarchs struggled against DuFrene.

Davis singled to lead off the top of the eighth, but a line drive and two strikeouts left Davis on first.  DuFrene finished with 14 strikeouts and only two hits in the shutout.  Sophomore pitcher Kurt Kelly pitched seven and a third innings for the Monarchs with seven strikeouts, while freshman Fred Geisinger entered in the eighth to record the final two outs.

The Monarchs will finish USA South Conference play at Shenandoah on Saturday at 1 pm.
