February 12, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs came from behind to win game one 11-8, but Southern Virginia's lead was too much in game two as the Knights won 9-4. The Monarchs move to 3-1 this season while Southern Virginia starts the season 1-1. The Monarchs started the first game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run to left center field from sophomore Seth Kivett. Senior Michael Carter scored on the play after a single to reach first. The Knights came back and took the lead in the top of the third inning with three runs. Methodist tied the game at three on back-to-back doubles from junior Billy Quinn and junior Dustin Proctor, but the rally fizzled with two left on base. Both teams got hot in the fifth with Southern Virginia scored five runs on five hits including a three-run home run. The Knights took an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the inning, but the Monarchs responded with their own offense. Carter led off with a single and Kivett hit his fifth home run of the season to score Carter. Senior Kyle Eudy was hit by a pitch and Quinn singled to advance Eudy to second. Proctor moved both runners on a hit by pitch and sophomore Brian Halpin hit the sacrifice fly to score Eudy and junior Philip Betterly singled to score Quinn. Senior Scott Russell loaded the bases on a single and all runners advanced with Proctor scoring on a balk. Betterly gave Methodist the 9-8 lead after taking advantage of a failed pickoff attempt from the Knights. Senior Robert Kisiah struck out the side in the top of the sixth and Methodist scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. Kisiah closed out the game in the seventh giving up a leadoff hit before striking out the next three batters. The Monarchs finished with the 11-8 win. Southern Virginia came out strong to start the second game creating a quick six run lead on three hits. The Monarchs made a dent in the bottom of the inning with a run on a RBI from Kivett that allowed freshman Tripp Lancaster to score. The second inning went scoreless before Southern Virginia scored three runs in the third on a home run, two singles and a double to take the 9-1 lead. Methodist picked up another run in the bottom of the third on a two-out rally. Kivett doubled and scored on an error from the Knights. Kivett led off the fifth with a single to left field. The Knights' catcher attempted to get Kivett at first, but threw it away allowing Kivett to advance to third. Carter walked and junior Brad Davis put the sacrifice fly out to right field to score Kivett. The Monarchs were looking to put a rally together but left three runners on base at the end of the inning. Methodist scored their fourth run in the bottom of the sixth on a double from Eudy, but could not score again. Southern Virginia closed out the 9-4 win in the bottom of the seventh. The Monarchs will host Frostburg and Lynchburg this weekend starting with a 3 pm game against Frostburg on Friday. |
