February 14, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs used a host of pitchers to defeat the Southern Virginia Knights in two games on Wednesday. In the first game, Southern Virginia tied the game at two in the fifth before Methodist took the 5-2 win. During game two, the Monarchs defeated the Knights 3-1. Methodist improves to 4-0 overall, while Southern Virginia falls to 0-8. The Monarchs jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Matt Hunt led off with a walk before senior Jonathan Spivey moved Hunt over to second on a single up the middle. Both players advanced with a stolen base before junior Kyle Eudy flew out to centerfield for Hunt to score. Southern Virginia countered in the second when a single by Kellen Sanders scored Jonathan Mills, but Hunt's single in the bottom of the second gave the Monarchs the lead again when freshman Brian Halpin scored. The Knights were held scoreless over the next two innings before tying the game at two in the top of the fifth. The Monarchs came back in the bottom of the fifth capitalizing on a walk by the Knights. With sophomore Brad Davis on first, Spivey advanced Davis to second on the ground out and Eudy's single to right field scored Davis for the eventual game-winning run. The Monarchs grabbed two more runs in the sixth inning when Scott Russell was walked to lead off and freshman Seth Kivett singled to center, moving Russell to second. Sophomore Philip Betterly laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing the runners. Halpin's fly out to center scored Russell and Hunt's single would score Kivett. Freshman AJ Vedrani pitched the fifth and sixth innings with four strikeouts to earn the win while freshman Fred Geisinger came into the game in the seventh inning to grab the save. Methodist picked up where they left off to start the second game. Hunt led off with a triple to right field and Hunt scored on a wild pitch to give the Monarchs the 1-0 lead. Hunt struck again in the bottom of the third when he singled through the left side, stole second base and then advanced to third on the throw. Junior Michael Carter was still up to bat when Hunt went on the pitch and stole home for the two run lead. The Knights left two on base in both the fourth and fifth innings, but the Monarch defense held Southern Virginia scoreless until the sixth. The Knights put the ball in play and moved around the bases with pinch runners to score on a wild pitch. Methodist capped off the scoring with a third run in the sixth inning when Russell singled to centerfield to score Spivey. Kivett came into pitch in the seventh to earn the save. Sophomore Chris Toth was credited with the win for his first two innings of work. The Monarchs will travel to Emory this weekend to play both Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm. |
