Spivey and Varnell named to ABCA All-South Region Team
Both players named Honorable Mention All-South Region

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  Methodist College junior left fielder Jonathan Spivey and senior relief pitcher Casey Varnell were honored today by the American Baseball Coaches Association.  Both players were named honorable mention All-South Region for their efforts in 2006.

Spivey, a junior from Tabor City, NC, led the Monarchs this past season hitting .360.  He also led the team in games played (43), games started (43), at bats (164), runs scored (39), hits (59), total bases (74), slugging percentage (.451), walks (33), and on base percentage (.481). 

Varnell, a senior from Macclesfield, NC, led the Monarchs with nine wins on the mound.  He went 9-3 with three saves in 68.1 innings of work and had the team's second best ERA at 4.21.  Varnell tied the Monarchs single season record with 28 appearances as a spot starter, closer, and middle relief pitcher.
