Wesleyan Outlasts Greensboro

ELON, N.C. – Behind 15 hits and a pair of Ted Williams homers, North Carolina Wesleyan College defeated Greensboro College 11-7 Friday in the USA South Baseball Tournament at Latham Park.

The Bishops (26-11-1) scored three runs each in the fourth and seventh innings. Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Williams started a rally with a two-out solo homer to left center field. Justin Tuck drew a walk, while Luke Williford belted a single and Daniel Moore drew a walk to load the bases. Matt Smith’s single up the middle scored both Tuck and Williford and pushed the Wesleyan lead to 4-0.

The Bishops added two more runs in the fifth before the Pride (25-13) answered with one in the sixth on an RBI by Alex Guerra. Greensboro added two runs in the seventh to pull within 7-3. However, the Bishops enjoyed a big inning in the seventh on yet another two-out rally.

Justin Batts hit an infield single and Justin Rahm followed with a home run to left center to push the advantage to 9-3. Williams gave the Bishops a 10-3 lead with his second home run of the game.

With two outs and a runner on first in the top of the eighth inning, but an error at first base led to four Greensboro runs. Daniel Poindexter helped plate the first runner of the inning with an RBI single to right field. Tyler O’Neil followed with a three-run homer to center and cut the deficit to 10-7. However, the Pride could get no closer, as NCWC added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth for the 11-7 final margin.

Ben Moore was credited with the win and improved to 8-1 on the season. He struck out seven in a complete game effort for the Bishops. Smith, Williams, Travis Beausoleil, and Rahm tallied two hits and two RBIs each.

O’neil went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Greensboro. Jeff Gregory also tallied three hits with one RBI and Poindexter added two hits and an RBI.

Greensboro will face Ferrum at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at Burlington Athletic Stadium, while Wesleyan advances to play the winner of CNU and Methodist in game nine Saturday at 12 noon.
