March 5, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Methodist took an early lead and never looked back as they cruised to an 8-3 victory over Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday. The Monarchs move to 11-6 on the season while Virginia Wesleyan stands at 7-3-1 overall. Sophomore Landon Jordan held the Marlins hitless in the top of the first inning giving Methodist the chance to take over early. Sophomore Brian Halpin led off with a walk and moved to second on senior Scott Russell's single through the right side. Sophomore Seth Kivett hit a single to the shortstop allowing all runners to advance. Junior Kenly Locklear's single through the left side scored the first two runs of the game. Junior Brad Davis singled and advanced to second on an error with both runners scoring for the 4-0 lead. Methodist added two runs in the fourth sparked by a leadoff single from senior Michael Carter. Junior Philip Betterly laid down the sacrifice bunt before Halpin hit a double to right center for Carter to score. Halpin moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball for the 6-0 lead. Virginia Wesleyan scored two runs in the fifth in two hits and a Methodist error, but the Monarchs came right back with two runs in the sixth. A single from Kivett scored Betterly and Locklear's sacrifice bunt allowed Russell to score. The Marlins came back and scored a run in the top of the ninth on the sacrifice fly, but a caught foul ball with runners on second and third ended the game with Methodist taking the 8-3 win. Jordan pitched four and two thirds innings while senior Robert Kisiah earned the win in relief. Sophomore Alex Sholar finished things off in the ninth. Kivett led the Monarchs at the plate batting 3-for-4 while Locklear finished with three RBI. The Monarchs will host Ferrum this weekend with a game on Saturday at 1 pm and Sunday at 2 pm.
