York Defeats Methodist 5-1

Scott Russell bats 2-for-4 with a RBI

FERRUM, VA -  York struck early with four runs in the first inning before going on to win 5-1 eliminating Methodist in the NCAA regional.  The Monarchs finish the 2007 season 30-15.

In the bottom of the first inning, York scored the first four runs of the game on four hits and two walks.  The Monarchs shut them down through the next five innings but struggled to get their own offense started.  Methodist left four runners on base through the first seven innings before York came out and scored their fifth run in the bottom of the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, Jonathan Spivey got on first with a bunt single and moved to second on a single by Matt Hunt.  Both runners advanced with a stolen base but were left stranded on a groundout to end the inning.

Methodist held York in the top of the ninth, before Michael Ellsworth led off the bottom of the inning with a single to right field.  Kyle Eudy doubled to right field advancing Ellsworth to third.  Scott Russell's fielder's choice scored Ellsworth for the Monarchs first run of the game.  The Spartans secured the win with a double play to end the game.

The Monarchs finish the season after winning their third consecutive USA South Conference regular season and receiving their first NCAA postseason bid since 2004.
