Nasiro-Sigo comes up short in NCAA
Division III Men’s Cross Country national championship bid
DELEWARE, Ohio – The
opportunity for an NCAA Division III individual national
championship and All-American honors came up a little short for
Methodist runner Husein Nasiro-Sigo on Saturday at the NCAA
Division III Cross Country Championships. The Monarchs’
Mason-Dixon Conference, USA South Athletic Conference and
Division III South/Southeast Region champion was amongst the
leaders heading into the final stretch of the race. However,
Nasiro-Sigo fell with a mile-and-a-half to go and could not
finish the race.

Monarchs’ Nasiro-Sigo
wins NCAA Division III Southeast championship for men’s cross
country
CONWAY, Ark. – The memorable season for Methodist
men’s cross country runner Husein Nasiro-Sigo was intensified on
Saturday with with a feat that only one other runner has done in
the history of Methodist cross
country – win a region title.
Nasiro-Sigo, a sophomore from Koffela, Ethiopia, became the
first Methodist runner since John Storms in 1989 to win an NCAA Division III
South/Southeast Region championship as he won the title at the
Hendrix College running course. Not only does Nasiro-Sigo win
the region championship, but he will also be a top contender
next Saturday (Nov. 19) at the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross
Country National Championships in Deleware, Ohio.

Methodist’s Nasiro-Sigo wins second
straight USA South men’s cross country championship
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Make it
two straight USA South Athletic Conference men’s cross country
championships for Husein Nasiro-Sigo. The Methodist sophomore
from Koffela, Ethiopia won his second consecutive USA South
Athletic Conference men’s individual championship on Saturday at
Hagan Stone Park. Nasiro-Sigo becomes the first ever Methodist
runner to win consecutive conference titles. Nasiro-Sigo
finished the 8K event in 26:02 minutes.

Methodist’s Nasiro-Sigo selected USA
South Male Runner of the Year in cross country
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
Methodist’s Husein Nasiro-Sigo was selected on Wednesday as the
2005 Male Runner of Year for the USA South Athletic Conference
for men’s cross country. This marks the first time ever that a
Methodist runner has received a Runner of the Year honor in the
conference. Nasiro-Sigo was also first team All-USA South for
the second straight season. In addition, Ryan Taylor was a
second team All-USA South selection on the men’s side, and
Krystal Patton was selected second team All-USA South on the
women’s side for a second straight season.

USA South Runner of the Week honors
FAYETTEVILLE,
N.C. – Methodist swept USA
South Athletic Conference Runner of the Week honors for men’s
and women’s cross country on Monday. Husein Nasiro-Sigo was
selected USA South Men’s Runner of the Week, while Krystal
Patton was the USA South Women’s Runner of the Week. It marks
the second straight week that Nasiro-Sigo has received the men’s
honor, and the second time in the last two weeks that Patton has
received the women’s honor.

Blake announces resignation as cross
country/track and field coach at Methodist
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
Halcyon “Tudy” Blake has submitted her resignation as head cross
country and track and field coach at Methodist, Methodist
Athletic Director Bob McEvoy announced late last week. Blake,
who is in her sixth season at Methodist, will finish out the
2005 cross country season and her last day at Methodist is Dec.
10. McEvoy also announced that a nationwide search for Blake’s
replacement has begun.

Monarchs’ Nasiro-Sigo wins
Mason-Dixon Men’s Cross Country Championship
FREDERICKSBURG, N.C. – Methodist’s Husein
Nasiro-Sigo took his first step towards a huge postseason in
cross country on Saturday as he won the men’s individual
championship of the 2005 Mason-Conference Championships at John
L. Pratt Park. It was the third individual victory of the season
for the Methodist sophomore. Nasiro-Sigo finished with a stellar
time of 25:47 in the 8K event. He edged Southern Virginia’s Jeff
White by a tenth of a second and finished a half a second ahead
of Matt Downs from Mary Washington. The time is the best yet
this season for Nasiro-Sigo.

South Athlete of the Week for men’s cross country
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – For the
second straight week, a Methodist runner has been selected as
the Runner of the Week for the USA South Athletic Conference.
Last week, it was Ryan Taylor. This week, Husein Nasiro-Sigo
takes the honor. The sophomore from Koffela, Ethiopia was
honored by the conference on Monday.

Methodist’s Nasiro-Sigo captures Old
North State Cross Country Championship
GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Methodist’s Husein Nasiro-Sigo won the men’s individual race on
Saturday at the Old North State Cross Country Championships at
Hagan Stone Park. Nasiro-Sigo won the race in a time of 26:42.9
in a race that included 36 athletes. It was Nasiro-Sigo’s second
individual championship in the 2005 season.

FAYETTEVILLE,
N.C. – The USA South Athletic
Conference issued its four weekly honors for men’s and women’s
cross country on Monday, and three of the honors went to runners
from Methodist. Ryan Taylor and Krystal Patton were selected USA
South Men’s and Women’s Runner of the Week, respectively, while
Jennifer Patterson received USA South Women’s Freshman Runner of
the Week honors. It marks the first time this 2005 season that
Methodist has been represented in the USA South weekly honors
for cross country.

Methodist cross country teams compete
in Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic
ORLANDO, Fla. – Both
the Methodist men’s and women’s cross country teams got a taste
of the Magic Kingdom on Saturday, competing in the Walt Disney
World Cross Country Classic at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
The Monarch men finished the Men’s University Race in 30th out
of 40 teams, while the Lady Monarchs didn’t place a team score.

Nasiro-Sigo finishes eighth at Great
American Cross Country Festival
RALEIGH, N.C. – Competing in
one of the more heralded cross country meets in the Southeast on
Saturday, Husein Nasiro-Sigo proved himself on a regional stage
for the Methodist Monarchs. The sophomore from Ethiopia finished
eighth overall in the Men's University and Open Division of the
Great American Cross Country Festival. Nasiro-Siga finished in a
time of 26:48.09, and it marked the first time ever that a
Methodist runner has cracked the Top 10 at the Great American
Cross Country Festival.

Nasiro-Sigo, Patton prevail in
Clayton-Sykes Invitational
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The
Methodist cross country teams opened the 2005 season at home on
Saturday, hosting the Clayton-Sykes Invitational. Although there
was no team scores kept, Methodist had first place winners in
both the men’s and women’s races. Sophomore Husein Nasiro-Sigo
won the men’s race in a time of 17:55, while Julie Patton was
victorious in the women’s race in a time of 24:25.

Monarchs picked third, Lady Monarchs
picked fifth in 2005 USA South preseason cross country poll
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The USA South Athletic Conference
released its 2005 preseason men’s and women’s preseason cross
country poll on Wednesday, and the Methodist Monarchs were
picked third in the in the men’s race. The Lady Monarchs,
meanwhile, were picked fifth in the women’s race.
