Methodist Falls to Emory & Henry
Senior Mike Hill becomes Methodist all-time career leader in rushing

FAYETTEVILLE, NC -  The Monarchs looked to get back on track on Saturday in a non-conference match-up with Emory & Henry. The defense held the Wasps to a season-low 13 points, but Emory & Henry won 13-3. Methodist falls to 0-4 on the season while Emory & Henry improves to 3-1.

Emory & Henry took over at their own 26-yard line in the first quarter after a missed field goal by Methodist. Matt Gillespie and Cain Ringstaff combined with eight carries for 39 yards to the Methodist 35-yard line. Gillespie picked up another 14 yards for the first down before Caleb Moore made it to the Methodist 16-yard line with a five-yard pick up. The Wasps' Luke Hawk converted the 32-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

The first quarter ended with the Monarchs on the Emory & Henry 30-yard line and the first down. Senior Mike Hill picked up another first down for the Monarchs early in the second quarter. The Wasps pushed the Monarchs back six, but Hill picked up three more. A false start sent Methodist to the Emory & Henry 28-yard line for freshman Mario Miralles to even the score with a 44-yard field goal.

The rest of the quarter went scoreless leaving the score 3-3 at halftime. The Monarchs had a chance to take the lead on their first possession of the third quarter but a 43-yard attempt missed wide right. The Methodist defense held the Wasps to just one first down in the third quarter, with neither team scoring. Methodist freshman Leigh Manley punted to start the fourth quarter for the Wasps to take over at their own 22-yard line. Emory & Henry used another 43-yards rushing along with a 20-yard pass from Daniel Booher to Jonathan Hawkins to reach the Methodist 15-yard line. Hawk hit a 32-yard field goal for the 6-3 lead.

The Monarchs could not get the first down on the next two possessions but took over on downs with 2:29 to go in the game. Sophomore quarterback Brandon Parks was picked off at the Methodist 36-yard line by Hank Loutzenhiser. Loutzenhiser gave the Wasps great field position with a 25-yard return to the Methodist 11-yard line. It was all Gillespie as he picked up five yards and then ran for the 6-yard touchdown. The Wasps led 13-3 with 1:21 to go. The Monarchs had one final possession, but multiple penalties pushed the Monarchs back to their own 15-yard line. Emory & Henry took over on downs and ran the clock out.
