Methodist University began playing football in 1989 and will be entering its 20th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008. Additionally, the 2008 season will mark the seventh season of USA South Athletic Conference (formerly Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) football competition with the regular-season champion earning a bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Methodist has produced 17 All-Americans under head coach Jim Sypult (81-78 in 16 seasons). In 1997, the Monarchs won a school-record nine games and ended the season ranked #24 nationally in the final Division III polls. In 2005, the Monarchs finished 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the USA South for a share of their first ever USA South championship. Methodist has tallied seven-win seasons in five of the past ten seasons and has recorded a .500 or better season in nine of the last 13 years!
