McCombs Hired to Join Methodist Coaching
Staff
McCombs to take over the Monarchs' wide receivers
FAYETTEVILLE, NC-
Methodist University Director of Athletics, Bob McEvoy,
has announced the hiring of Jerry McCombs to join the Methodist
football coaching staff. No stranger to the USA South Conference,
McCombs spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach
at Averett University in Danville, VA.

victory over Shenandoah. Methodist improves to 4-6 overall
and 4-3 in the USA South this season while Shenandoah finishes

and held on for a 13-7 win for their second straight win
and third overall this season. Methodist improves to 3-6
overall and 3-3 in the USA South this season while Greensboro

win over Maryville. Methodist improves to 2-6 overall and

but the Christopher Newport Captains came back with a big
second half to win the game 24-17. Methodist moves to 1-6
overall and 1-3 in the USA South this season while Christopher
Newport improves to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Senior Jonathan Mularski leads all receivers with 92 yards
FERRUM, VA - The Monarchs shut down the pass Saturday,
but the Ferrum running game was too much for Methodist with
the Panthers taking a 21-13 win. Methodist moves to 1-5
overall and 1-2 in the USA South this season while Ferrum
improves to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Monarchs Earn First Win of the Season
Antonio Bartee and Jeremy Perkins led the defense to hold
Averett to six points
DANVILLE, VA -
Down but not out, the Methodist football team put the past
four weeks behind them and earned their first win of the
season in a 34-6 victory over Averett University. The Monarchs
struck early and went on to score 27 points in the first
half to secure the win. Methodist moves to 1-4 overall and
1-1 in the USA South this season while Averett drops to
0-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference. release

- The Monarchs looked to get back on track on Saturday
in a non-conference match-up with Emory & Henry. The
defense held the Wasps to a season-low 13 points, but Emory
& Henry won 13-3. Methodist falls to 0-4 on the season

N.C. Wesleyan Defeats Monarchs
Senior Pat Doleman scores the only Methodist touchdown on

FAYETTEVILLE, NC
- N.C. Wesleyan was picked to win the USA South Conference
and they came out Saturday to prove to the Monarchs they
deserved the top spot. The Bishops scored in the first minute
of play and went on to win 50-10 over Methodist. Methodist
falls to 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference play while
N.C. Wesleyan improves to 2-2 on the year and 1-0 in the

- The Monarchs had an early lead but Chowan sent the
game into overtime and went on to win 31-30. The Monarchs
move to 0-2 on the year while Chowan stands at 1-3 this

JV Football to Face Chapel Hill Club Team Sunday
Late addition to the schedule gives Monarchs added game
FAYETTEVILLE, NC
- The Methodist football coaching staff has announced
the JV football team will host the UNC-Chapel Hill club
team this Sunday at 2 pm. The game is a late addition to
the schedule in place of prior cancellations. All fans are
admitted to the game free of charge.

Senior Daryl Lawrence tallies 19 tackles on the day

- The Monarchs opened the 2007 season putting points
on the board, but couldn't keep up with Guilford in the
end. Guilford outlasted the Monarchs for the 50-47 win to
move to 2-0 on the season while the Monarchs fall to 0-1.

2007 Methodist Football Preview
Monarchs picked to finish third in the USA South Athletic
Conference
FAYETTEVILLE, NC
- The 2006 Methodist football season did not live
up to Head Coach Jim Sypult’s expectations. Coming
off of a USA South Athletic Conference Championship in 2005,
everyone knew there would be necessary adjustments, but
a 2-5 conference record was not on the agenda. Sypult hopes
the lessons learned last season will translate into greater
success in 2007. The Monarchs have been picked third in
the USA South Athletic Conference preseason poll and hope
behind North Carolina Wesleyan and Christopher Newport.

Rhyan Breen, Sara Poling and Kelly Shipkowski honored with
highest academic honors

Each year, the Methodist Department of Athletics honors
the male and female student-athletes with the highest cumulative
grade point average. Football player, and recent graduate
Rhyan Breen will receive the Male Scholar Athlete of the
Year award. For the first time there was a tie amongst
the females with both Sara Poling and Kelly Shipkowski named
Female Scholar Athletes of the Year. release

Football Gazette has released the NCAA Division III South
