October 27, 2007 MARYVILLE, TN - Maryville took an early lead in the first quarter, but Methodist scored 20 points in the second quarter on the way to a 27-23 win over Maryville. Methodist improves to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the USA South this season while Maryville moves to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Maryville took over with 13 minutes remaining in the first quarter and moved 94 yards down the field on ten plays to score the first touchdown of hte game. Methodist could only gain one first down on three possessions in the first quarter while the Scots held a 7-0 lead going into the second quarter. Maryville missed a 39-yard field goal with 11:15 to go in the half and Methodist took over on their own 22-yard line. The Methodist offense balanced between the pass and the run with Methodist quarterback Brandon Parks finding senior Patrick Doleman for an 11-yard pass to the Maryville 12-yard line to get the first down. The Monarchs dropped a couple of yards on the next play, but Parks connected with senior Romin Pousson for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Freshman Mario Miralles tied the game with the extra point. Both teams were forced to punt on their next possessions with Maryville taking over at their own 12-yard line with 4:18 to go. Nick Moore picked up a first down on an 11-yard run, but with third down and eight yards to go, Methodist sophomore Koby King intercepted Lucas Wall's pass at the Maryville 43-yard line. Freshman Corey McGuire ran for three yards before Parks found freshman Brian Hopkins with a 40-yard touchdown pass to take the lead. The extra point was blocked giving Methodist a 13-7 lead. On the next Metohdist possession, Parks completed an 11-yard pass to senior Jonathan Mularski and on the next play Parks hit freshman Te'Varaz Fulmore with a 66-yard touchdown pass with just 44 seconds remaining in the half. Miralles' kick was good for the 20-7 lead. The Scots used a 20-yard run from Wall to move the ball quickly into Methodist territory in the final seconds. Brad Daniell attempted a 42-yard field goal with five seconds to go, but the Monarchs blocked the kick to hold the 20-7 advantage at halftime. Maryville came out and ate up almost six minutes of the clock on their way to a touchdown to start the third quarter. The Monarchs took over, but were forced to punt and Maryville went back down the field to hit a 43-yard field goal closing the gap to 20-17. A Methodist fumble gave the ball back to Maryville at the end of the quarter. Rommel Hightower ran for nine yards on two carries to reach the Methodist 24-yard line and Wall finished the drive with a 24-yard touchdown run. The Scots went for two and railed, but Maryville took the 23-20 lead with 13:59 left in the game. A Methodist 43-yard field goal was blocked and Maryville took over once again. Maryville tried to go for it on fourth down with two yards to go, but fumbled the ball. The next two possessions left the offense to punt before Methodist took over with 4:35 to go. Parks took over late with three completions before finding Fulmore once again for the 10-yard touchdown pass with just 2:23 to go. Miralles' extra point gave Methodist a 27-23 lead. The Methodist defense stalled Maryville allowing just one first down before the Scots gave the ball back to Methodist on downs after a failed fourth and three pass attempt. The Monarchs took a knee to run the clock out and secure their second win of the season. With just 17 yards rushing on the day, it was Parks' 353 yards passing in 18-for-28 with four touchdowns that took over on Saturday. Mularksi led with six catches on the day while Doleman caught four catches for 111 yards. King finished the game with 18 tackles to go along with his interception while senior Daryl Lawrence added 13 tackles. The Monarchs will travel to Greensboro on Saturday to face the Pride at 7 pm.
