Football Picked Fifth in USA South Preseason Poll
Head coach Jim Sypult spoke at media day Tuesday

DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University hosted the 2008 USA South Football Media Day on Tuesday where the preseason poll was announced. The Methodist Monarchs have been selected fifth based on a vote by conference head coaches. Each head coach spoke to the media on Tuesday answering questions regarding the outlook for this season.

Christopher Newport leads the league in the preseason poll with 47 points. The Captains also received five first place votes while Ferrum was picked second with two first place votes and 40 points. Maryville came in third with 39 points while defending conference champions, the N.C. Wesleyan Bishops received the final first place vote along with 30 points.

Coming off of a 5-5 season in 2007, Methodist head coach Jim Sypult's team has been picked fifth in the poll with 28 points. Following the Monarchs was Shenandoah in sixth with 20 points, Greensboro in seventh with 11 points and Averett in eighth with nine points.

The 2008 USA South football schedule kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 6 as all eight teams begin their seasons. The Monarchs will host Campbell University at 1 pm.
