November 19, 2006 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs were anxious to start their season and they started things off right with an 85-59 win over Newport News Apprentice. The Monarchs took a 6-4 lead with 15:34 left to play in the first half and never looked back. Methodist moves to 1-0 on the season while Apprentice falls to 0-1. Sophomore Travis McBryde got things started early picking up three offensive rebounds in the first five minutes. Junior Brian Lane capped things off with a 3-pointer to give the Monarchs the 46-30 lead at halftime. Lane would go 4-for-4 from behind the arc finishing 5-for-5 from the field with 13 points. Sophomore transfer AB Lehmann sank four 3-pointers of his own in his first official game as a Monarch. Apprentice builder Fred Spratley was fouled going in the lane but made the layup and the free throw to close the margin to 11 with 12:38 left in the second half, but the Monarchs regained composure and finished strong. Senior Dragan Radmanovic hit two jumpers and Lane scored two of his 3-pointers before the team and the crowd rallied behind sophomore Antwin Shuford with a steal and a dunk with just over 3 minutes remaining to give the Monarchs a 25-point lead. The Monarchs finished with nine threes and shot 50% from the field for the game. Termaine Torren led Apprentice with 13 points while Terrance Bryant had 10 rebounds. The Monarchs will travel to Piedmont on November 26th to face the Lions at 2 pm. |
