Averett Defeats Monarchs 61-58
Sophomore Antwin Shuford leads Methodist with 20 points and 13 rebounds

DANVILLE, VA-  With seven lead changes and three ties, the Methodist-Averett match-up proved to be a tight contest.  The Monarchs led by as many as seven, but the Cougars came back to defeat the Monarchs 61-58 in the final minutes.  The Monarchs fall to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the USA South, while Averett moves to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Both teams exchanged the lead during the first half before freshman Adrian Bascom hit a layup to tie the game at 18 with 6:41 remaining.  Tyler Eubanks hit a 3-pointer for Averett before the Monarchs finished the half on a 12-4 run to lead 30-25 at halftime.

The Monarchs took a seven point lead on a Bascom free throw with less than eight minutes remaining in the game.  Averett came back and tied the game at 50 with 4:22 to go.  Bascom came back to hit a layup and go up by two, but Eubanks hit another three to take what would be the lead for good.  The Cougars took a four point lead with just 20 seconds remaining, but Shuford was fouled and hit both free throws to move within two.  The Monarchs fouled with nine seconds remaining sending Cougar Cory McDaniel to the line to shoot one-and-one.  McDaniel hit the first one but missed the second with Shuford grabbing the rebound.  The Monarchs called a timeout with 8.8 seconds on the clock, but a 3-point attempt to tie fell short giving the Cougars the win.

Shuford led the Monarchs with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Bascom added 17 points and 9 rebounds.  Shaun Hagwood led the Cougars with 16 points.

The Monarchs will host Maryville College on Saturday at 2 pm.
