February 2, 2008 NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Methodist Monarchs scored first against the Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday evening and went on to win 95-85 without ever relinquishing the lead. Senior Billy McDade was on fire scoring 42 points for Methodist, just one shy of tying the school record for points in a game. The Monarchs move to 11-7 overall this season and 3-2 in the USA South while Christopher Newport is 5-13 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Methodist took the lead early and slowly expanded their lead to as many as 14 points with 9:44 remaining in the half. Junior Travis McBryde had two dunks in the first half to help give Methodist a 43-32 lead at the break. The Monarchs increased their lead to 15 early in the second half, before the Captains began to make their move. At the 14:46 mark, Christopher Newport had moved within two before climbing within one with 11:24 to go in the game. The Monarchs responded by finishing 13-for-16 from the free throw line in the final five minutes to preserve the 95-85 win. McDade was crucial for Methodist with 42 points, half of which were scored from behind the 3-point arc. Junior A.B. Lehmann and McBryde added 12 points a piece while McBryde led with nine rebounds. The Monarchs will continue their road trip tomorrow at Shenandoah at 4 pm. |
