NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Monarchs took an early lead in the first half before Christopher Newport took over midway through the half. Methodist came back in the second half to tie the game at 80, but the Captains prevailed 93-91. Methodist falls to 10-13 overall and 5-6 in the USA South while Christopher Newport moves to 15-9 this season and 7-4 in the conference. A three-pointer by sophomore AB Lehmann gave the Monarchs a six point lead six minutes into the game, but the Captains closed the gap before taking the lead with 8:57 to go in the half. Christopher Newport led by as many as 11 before junior Craig Moore had a tip-in to close the gap to nine at halftime. The Monarchs slowly chipped away at the lead during the second half. Another three-pointer by Lehmann tied the game at 80 with 3:44 left in the game. The Captains responded with a layup, but senior Dragan Radmanovic gave the Monarchs a one point lead with a three-pointer on the next possession. Christopher Newport regained a six point lead with 32 seconds to go, but senior Rob Lee's two three-pointers within eleven seconds closed the lead to two. Methodist called a timeout with fifteen seconds left, but the Monarchs attempts to tie the game fell short giving the Captains the 93-91 win. Lee led the Monarchs with 24 points while sophomore Antwin Shuford scored 18 points and Radmanovic finished with 17. Radmanovic added 9 rebounds in the loss. The Monarchs will travel to Shenandoah to face the Hornets on Saturday at 4 pm. Currently tied for fourth place with NC Wesleyan, Saturday's games will determine the USA South Conference tournament seeding with second, third and fourth place teams hosting quarterfinals on Tuesday. |
