December 2, 2006 DAYTONA BEACH, FL- Embry Riddle won the Daytona Mitsubishi Shootout Saturday night defeating Methodist 77-68. The Monarchs finish the tournament with a 2-2 overall record while Embry Riddle jumps out to an 8-1 start on the season. Junior Travis Winstead sank four threes in the first half to lead the Monarchs. The first half was a game of runs as Embry Riddle would get out to 9-2 and 22-8 leads before the Monarchs would be able to put together their own offense. The Eagles still held a 31-20 lead when Winstead hit two three-pointers to move the Monarchs within five with two minutes remaining in the half. The Eagles hit two more layups while Monarch senior Dragan Radmanovic went 1-for-2 from the free throw line and finished an offensive rebound with a basket to close the first half down 29-35. The second half started with the Monarchs determined to close the gap. Senior Brandon Williams scored a layup to make the score 38-40 before freshman Adrian Bascom hit one of two free throws to move within one with 16 minutes remaining in the half. Embry Riddle would go on another run extending their lead to as many as 13 points before the Monarchs would get back into it. The Eagles went 6-for-8 behind the free throw line before sophomore AB Lehmann hit a three-pointer to make the score 61-68 and Williams scored a layup to move within five with a little more than two minutes left. Embry Riddle countered with a layup, but sophomore Travis McBryde came back with a layup with 1:15 remaining. With little time remaining, the Monarchs were forced to foul and the Eagles held their composure at the free throw line to win the game 77-68. Winstead finished with 21 points while seniors Williams and Radmanovic both had 12. Radmanovic led the Monarchs with 11 rebounds. Lehmann had six assists in the loss. The Monarchs will take next weekend off before traveling to the Randolph-Macon Tournament December 17-18. |
