January 19, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Methodist returned from an overtime loss on Wednesday to knock off Ferrum 82-67. The Monarchs improve to 9-6 overall this season and 1-1 in the USA South while Ferrum drops to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Methodist took a 9-7 lead early in the game on a steal and subsequent dunk from freshman LeuMichael Smith. The Monarchs extended their lead to nine on a 3-pointer from senior Billy McDade with just over four minutes to go in the half. Ferrum moved to within one on free throws with 1:22 left, but Methodist scored the next five points to lead 41-35 at halftime. Ferrum came out strong in the second half tying the game at 52 on a fastbreak layup at the 14:04 mark. McDade responded with the dunk, but Ferrum tied the game again on free throws. The Panthers took a brief three point lead, but Methodist closed in and held Ferrum without a field goal for almost seven minutes. A 3-pointer from McDade with 1:19 on the clock gave Methodist a 10 point advantage and left Ferrum to foul. The Monarchs went 3-for-4 from the free throw line before McDade grabbed a steal and fed Smith on the fast break who bounced the ball off the backboard to find junior Travis McBryde for the dunk to win 82-67. Smith finished with 23 points to lead the Monarchs while McDade and junior Antwin Shuford each added 13 points. Shuford completed the double-double with 13 rebounds. Sophomore Tyler Sigman tallied a career-high eight assists. The Monarchs will host Averett University on Tuesday at 7:30 pm. |
