December 18, 2006 ASHLAND, VA- The Monarchs had another strong second half to defeat Gettysburg 71-61 and take home the Hal Nunnally December Classic Championship. Methodist finished the weekend 2-0 to improve their overall record to 4-2 while Gettysburg falls to 2-7 on the season. The Monarchs' shots weren't falling in the first half as they shot 34.5 percent from the field and Gettysburg jumped out to an early lead winning the battle of the boards early. Gettysburg Bullet player Dan Capkin hit two free throws with 11:22 remaining in the first half to extend their lead to 15 points. The Monarchs countered with a layup by junior Craig Moore as they tried to get back in the game. Methodist closed the half with a 14-2 run to tie the game at 29 going into the locker room. Junior Travis Winstead hit two three-pointers in the final three minutes to lead the Monarchs' comeback. Methodist continued to build on their resurgence from the end of the first half building a significant lead early. Freshman Adrian Bascom gave the Monarchs their first lead of the game in the third minute of the game with a layup after a steal by senior Dragan Radmanovic. The Bullets stayed within striking range, but the Monarchs led during the entire second half. Once again four Monarchs finished in double figures with Winstead leading the team with 15 points. Bascom and senior Brandon Williams added 13 while sophomore Antwin Shuford had 12. Sophomore point guard AB Lehmann scored nine points and chipped in five assists in the win. In the second half, the Monarchs dominated the boards 17-10. Randolph-Macon defeated Union 84-54 in the Consolation Game. The Monarchs will take a break for the Christmas holiday before hosting Guilford December 30th at 3 pm in the March F. Riddle Center. |
