Methodist senior honored amongst candidates from five states

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) announced the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams for men’s basketball on Thursday, and the Methodist Monarchs were represented in District 3. Senior Eugene Grant was selected to the second team All-District team of the College Division.

District 3 consists of all the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA programs in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina Georgia and Florida. All candidates had to have a cumulative 3.2 grade-point average, had a least one year of eligibility at the current institution and played in at least 50 percent of the games this season.

A 6-foot-2, 200-pound guard from Rockingham, N.C., Grant has been a starter for head coach David Smith’s Monarchs for the last two seasons and lettered all of the last three seasons in a Methodist uniform. He has helped lead Methodist to three straight USA South Athletic Conference regular season championships, two straight USA South Tournament championships and two straight appearances in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

This season, Grant is averaging 11 points and four rebounds a game and leads the Monarchs in assists with 73. Earlier this season, Grant became the 17th player in the history of Methodist men’s basketball to reach 1,000 career points.

Off the court, Grant is equally impressive. He has a current cumulative GPA of 3.37 in mathematics, and has been selected USA South All-Academic each of the last three seasons.
