FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Greensboro Pride had not won at the Riddle Center in almost seven years, but managed to take the first conference game of the season in a 62-47 win over the Monarchs. The Monarchs fall to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while Greensboro moves to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the USA South. It took both teams awhile to get started with more than two and a half minutes in between the first two baskets of the game. Greensboro slowly built their lead throughout the first half leading by as many as 19 with just under three minutes remaining. The Monarchs' shots were not falling as they went 4-for-22 for 18.2 percent from the field in the first half. On the other hand Greensboro shot 52 percent to take the 31-16 lead at halftime. With less than five minutes remaining in the second half, the Monarchs went on a 7-0 run to close the Pride lead to eight points. Freshman Bryan Pittman drove through the lane to score a layup to make the score 47-55. On the next possession, senior Dragan Radmanovic stole the ball from Greensboro and sophomore Antwin Shuford was fouled. With the chance to cut the lead to six with 2:14 remaining, Shuford missed both and Greensboro finished the game scoring the final seven points on free throws and a 3-pointer by Bruce Zamuel. Shuford led the Monarchs with 11 points and 11 rebounds while both sophomore AB Lehmann and senior Rob Lee had 10 a piece. Lynn Bright and Bruce Zamuel each had 11 to lead the Pride. The Monarchs will travel to Ferrum on Saturday to face the Panthers at 4 pm. |
