Monarchs Drop One in Overtime to Greensboro
Senior Billy McDade sends the game into overtime

GREENSBORO, NC- The Monarchs were down by 14 at halftime, but made a late push in the second half to give themselves a chance at the end. Greensboro just edged Methodist 76-75 in overtime. The Monarchs move to 8-6 overall this season and 0-1 in the USA South while Greensboro moves to 7-7 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

After Methodist scored the opening basket, Greensboro went on a 25-4 run to take a 19 point lead over the Monarchs through the first eight and a half minutes. Freshman LeuMichael Smith cut the lead to seven with just over three minutes in the half, but Greensboro came back to take a 38-24 lead at halftime.

Methodist slowly chipped away at the lead during the second half with freshman Leland Jones tying the game at 54 with 7:10 on the clock. The Monarchs tied the game again at 65 with Methodist earning a one point margin on a free throw from Smith. Greensboro hit a jumper and two free throws to lead by three, but Methodist senior Billy McDade hit a crucial 3-pointer to tie the game with six seconds on the clock. The Pride was whistled for a technical foul, and McDade made both free throws to give Methodist a two-point cushion. The Pride came back and hit a jumper on the other end to send the game into overtime.

The teams exchanged baskets in the overtime period with Methodist taking a 75-73 lead on a basket from senior Travis Winstead. Greensboro was fouled and tied it on free throws with 29 seconds left. Methodist fouled late sending Greensboro's R.J. Smith to the line. He made his first free throw, which would be enough as the Monarchs final attempt just missed to win it.

Billy McDade and LeuMichael Smith finished with 22 points a piece to lead the Monarchs. Winstead also reached double figures with 12 points. McDade added seven rebounds.

The Monarchs return to the Riddle Center to host Ferrum on Saturday at 4 pm.
