![]() Monarchs fall 91-51 at non-conference rival Maryville McDonald scores career-high 19 points as Methodist drops region contest MARYVILLE, Tenn. – What could have been a preview of a postseason showdown didn’t turn out that way for the Methodist Monarchs as they dropped a 91-51 rout at region rival Maryville on Saturday at the Cooper Center. The non-conference defeat drops Methodist to 4-11 overall. Maryville, paced by junior center Bobby Golden, took control early and never looked back. After Methodist cut the Scot lead to 11-6 on two free throws by Antwin Shuford, Maryville went on an 11-1 run behind two 3-point baskets by Andy Chaney and one each by Bo Mason and Monte Calloway. Three times, Maryville stretched the lead to 25 points as Golden scored all three times on lay-ups. Chaney’s 3-point basket as time expired in the first half gave the Scots a 54-24 lead at halftime. The Monarchs never got on track in the second half as Maryville kept up the charge. Golden’s 3-point basket at the 13:09 mark stretched the Scot lead to 65-30. Maryville then led by as much as 47 points as Andrew Shumate drained two straight 3-point baskets to make the Scot lead 89-42 with 4:48 remaining. For the game, Maryville shot 52 percent from the field, including 56 percent from 3-point range. Freshman guard Fred McDonald scored a career-high 19 points for Methodist, while Shuford added eight points. Golden scored a game-high 28 points on 12-for-16 shooting from the field for Maryville (15-3), while Calloway scored 16 points and Chaney scored 15 points and Bradley Blair added 10 points off the bench. Methodist return to USA South Athletic Conference play on Monday night, playing host to longtime rival North Carolina Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m. at the Riddle Center. |
