January 12, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Methodist earned another non-conference win on Saturday to remain undefeated at home heading into USA South play. The Monarchs out ran Piedmont 100-83 for an 8-5 record this season. Piedmont moves to 8-7 overall. Methodist opened the game on a 6-0 run. Piedmont moved to within in one at 12-11 on a 3-pointer from Branden Mayweather, but the Monarchs pulled ahead again building a nine point lead with 12:20 left in the half. The Lions hit their next three 3-pointers to tie the game at 29 and took the lead on a layup from Jake Baldwin at 8:31. Methodist junior Antwin Shuford was fouled going up after an offensive rebound and hit his first free throw and scored a layup on the next Methodist possession to give the Monarchs the lead again. Methodist would lead by as many as nine in the final minutes of the half, but a late 3-pointer from Piedmont gave Methodist the 44-41 lead at halftime. Piedmont led on two different occasions within the first four minutes of the second half, but the Monarchs' regained their offense from a balanced attack. After leading by just two points with 13:40 remaining, Methodist went on a 11-2 run over the next two and a half minutes. Methodist junior Travis McBryde helped Methodist with 11 second half points to build a 19 point lead towards the end of the game. The Methodist fans celebrated the Monarchs' 100th point of the game on a layup from sophomore Tyler Sigman with less than 10 seconds remaining for the 100-83 Methodist win. Methodist had six players in double figures led by Shuford and freshman LeuMichael Smith. Sigman finished with 16 points while senior Billy McDade scored 14 and junior A.B. Lehmann added 13 points. Shuford and McDade led with eight rebounds a piece while Smith grabbed six steals. The Monarchs open conference play on the road on Wednesday at Greensboro scheduled for a 7:30 pm tipoff. |
