FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs won their second straight with a 71-55 win over Piedmont. More than a month ago, the Monarchs lost at Piedmont, but came back to defeat the Lions at the Riddle Center. The Monarchs improve to 6-7 overall, while Piedmont falls to 7-8 this season. Piedmont scored first with a layup by Jake Baldwin before Monarch sophomore Antwin Shuford evened the score with a layup of his own. Piedmont scored again to go up 4-2, but freshman Adrian Bascom tied it for the Monarchs and Shuford gave the Monarchs the lead for good with 16:26 remaining in the first half. Piedmont was within three with less than eight minutes in the half, but Methodist extended their lead to 10 going into the locker room. Methodist jumped out early in the second half before the Lions closed the lead to five, but the Monarchs went on an 11-2 run over the next five minutes to jump ahead by fourteen. Every time Piedmont would try to get something going, the Methodist offense responded. The Monarchs led by as many as 21 in the second half before they closed it out with the 71-55 win. The Monarchs controlled the basketball with only ten turnovers while Piedmont had 17. Both Bascom and Shuford finished with double-doubles. Bascom had 15 points and 10 rebounds while Shuford had 13 points and 11 boards. Junior Travis Winstead also had 13 points while sophomore AB Lehmann had 11 and Williams scored 10. The Monarchs will travel to Averett on Tuesday to face the Cougars at 7:30 pm in USA South Conference action. |
