Monarchs’ Porter selected first team Division III All-South Region by NABC

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Add another All-Region honor to the list of postseason accolades for Sam Porter.

The Methodist senior forward was honored on Monday as a Division III first team All-South Region selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Selected coaches from the South Region voted for the All-Region team. By being selected first team All-Region, Porter is now eligible for potential Division III All-American honors.

Already first team All-USA South Athletic Conference and the USA South Athletic Conference Player of the Year for the 2005 seasons, Porter is a repeat All-Region selection. Last season, he was a second team All-Region selection. He is joined on the first team by Randolph-Macon’s Justin Wansley, Southwestern’s Aaron Browser, Maryville’s Sydney Ellis, Trinity’s Sean Devins and Bridgewater’s Ricky Easterling.

A 6-foot-4, 221-pounder from Bamberg, S.C., Porter epitomized the true "Blue Collar" player this season. He averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds overall, but 15 points and 13 rebounds a game in conference play. Porter led the USA South in rebounding, while being ranked fourth in steals and ninth in scoring. In addition, he’s ranked 20th in the nation in rebounding and 44th in steals.

A game wasn’t a game unless Porter recorded a double-double. In fact, he recorded a whopping 13 this season, including nine in the Monarchs’ 12 conference games. His top performance was arguably a 25-point, 15-rebound performance at Greensboro, plus 24 points and 11 rebounds against Shenandoah and 20 points and 15 rebounds against North Carolina Wesleyan.

In only two seasons in a Methodist uniform, Porter finishes his Monarch career ranked eighth all-time in rebounding with 548 rebounds. He also set the single-season school record for steals this season with 67, and tied the single-game mark for steals with seven.
