December 17, 2006 ASHLAND, VA- Methodist was down by seven at halftime and as many as 12 points in the second half before closing out the game on a 22-4 run to win 76-69 over the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets. The Monarchs move to 3-2 on the season while Randolph-Macon is 4-4 overall. Methodist opened the game with a 10-2 lead before Randolph-Macon started chipping away. The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 10 with 13:31 remaining in the first half. Over the next seven minutes, Randolph-Macon would gain the advantage with a couple of baskets before the Monarchs would come back to tie it. The score was tied at 21 with a little more than six remaining in the first half before Randolph-Macon stretched their lead to seven at the half. During the second half, Randolph-Macon maintained the upper hand over Methodist with the Monarchs only shooting 1-for-7 in the first few minutes of play. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 12 midway through the second half. The Monarchs scored a couple of layups and finished their free throws, but Randolph-Macon was still ahead 65-54 with 7:17 remaining. During the final seven minutes, the Monarchs shot 70 percent from the field and went 8-for-10 from the free throw line while shutting Randolph-Macon down to four points. The Monarchs strong finish gave them the 76-69 win allowing them to advance to the championship game Monday night at 8 pm versus Gettysburg. Four players finished in double figures for the Monarchs with sophomores Antwin Shuford and Travis McBryde leading the pack with 15 a piece. Shuford led all players with 10 rebounds. Junior guard Travis Winstead added 14 points with 12 of them coming in the second half while freshman Adrian Bascom added 11 points. The Monarchs held their turnovers to 16 while grabbing 15 steals in the win. The team outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 36-25. Gettysburg defeated Union in the first game of the Hal Nunnally December Classic 64-49. |
