WASHINGTON, DC- The Monarchs were leading the Rutgers-Newark Raiders for most of the game before the Raiders overcame a 19-point deficit to take the 76-72 win. Methodist made a push at the end behind eight 3-pointers from sophomore AB Lehmann, but the Raiders held on for the win. Methodist falls to 4-6 on the season while Rutgers-Newark is 10-2. The Monarchs jumped out early, leading 42-28 at halftime behind 53.6 percent shooting from the field, while they shot 8-for-13 from behind the arc. Methodist looked like they had bounced back from their loss on Saturday and were firing on all cylinders. The second half opened with Lehmann's fifth 3-pointer and a layup by senior Dragan Radmanovic to extend their lead to 19 points. Rutgers-Newark called a timeout and started chipping away at the lead with a 14-0 run over the next three minutes. During the same time period, the Monarchs went 0-for-2 with six turnovers. Methodist sophomore Antwin Shuford closed the drought with a layup with less than 16 minutes remaining in the half and the score 49-42. Both teams traded baskets while the Raiders continued to cut into the lead until Chadd Barnes hit a 3-pointer to give the Raiders the 56-54 lead at 11:07. Rutgers-Newark kept building their lead, winning by as many as nine points with less than a minute remaining. Lehmann hit his seventh and eight 3-pointers of the day to move within three points, but Barnes hit his first of two free throws to top off the scoring at 76-72. Lehmann led the Monarchs with 26 points while Shuford had 12, Radmanovic had 11, while senior Rob Lee added 10 points. Shuford completed his double-double with 12 rebounds in the loss. Prior to Sunday afternoon's contest, four Monarchs were tied in the record book each with seven 3-pointers in a game. The last player to make seven was Duane Parham against Messiah during the 2001-02 season. Fayetteville native, AB Lehmann broke the record late in the second half to become the lone holder of the record with eight 3-point field goals. The Monarchs return to the March F. Riddle Center to open conference play by hosting Greensboro College on Wednesday at 7:30 pm. |
