Monarchs win Pine Needles Invitational by one stroke over Pfeiffer
Horton, Schneider finish tied for fourth with a 148

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – The Methodist Monarch men’s golf team opened its 2006 season in fine fashion on Tuesday, winning its opening tournament of the spring. The Monarchs overcame a three stroke deficit on Monday to win the Pine Needles Invitational by one stroke at the Pine Needles Lodge.

Methodist shot a 299 on Tuesday to finish with a two-round total of 599 to win the 18-team tournament field. That was one stroke ahead of host Pfeiffer and four strokes in front of third place Texas Wesleyan. Rounding out the Top 10 was Berry (608), Guilford (612), Greensboro (617), Oglethorpe (618), Wesley (619), Emory (619) and Lee (624).

Individually for the Monarchs, Adam Horton (75-73) and Cory Schneider (73-75) finished tied for fourth overall with a 148, while freshman Matt Bova finished tied for 14th with a 150 (75-75). Other scores for Methodist included Brian Gussis with a 153 (77-76) and Nick Bova with a 159 (80-79).

Methodist’s next tournament is the Callaway Collegiate in Callaway Gardens, Ga., on Mar. 6-7.
