Monarchs lead after first round of Tom O’Briant Memorial

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Playing its first tournament of the 2005 fall season, the Methodist Monarch men’s golf team took the lead after the first round of the Tom O’Briant Memorial on Monday at Cardinal Golf and Country Club. Aiming for an unprecedented third straight Tom O’Briant championship, the Monarchs shot a 288 for the opening round.

Methodist, ranked second in the first Division III National Top 25 released this week, holds a two-stroke lead over Huntingdon and a three-stroke lead over Wesley. Emory is fourth at 296 and Oglethorpe is fifth at 297. The tournament features nine of the Top 25 teams ranked in Division III, including six in the top-10.

Individually for the Monarchs, Adam Horton and Cory Schneider both shot a one-over-par 71, and have a share of third place with Ray Cook from Wesley. LaGrange’s Richard Poole and Rhodes’ Matt Durand share the overall lead at one-under 69.

In addition, Nick Bova and John Duckworth both shot 73 for the Monarchs, while Brant Dixon shot a 74.

The second and final round of the Tom O”Briant Memorial is set for Tuesday at Cardinal Golf and Country Club.
