Methodist Defeats Averett 6-1
Junior Evan Monteiro scores a hat trick in the win

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Monarchs opened USA South Conference play on Wednesday with a 6-1 win over the Averett Cougars. Methodist opened the scoring early took a 3-0 lead at the half. Methodist moves to 7-3 on the year and 1-0 in the conference while Averett falls to 4-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the USA South.

Junior Evan Monteiro started things off for the Monarchs with a goal that split the defense and the goalkeeper for the first goal of the game in just the fourth minute of play. Sophomore Bret Brennan followed up with a goal through the 18-yard box to beat the keeper. In the 23rd minute, senior C.J. Komons crossed the ball from the right flank for Monteiro to hit it first time for his second goal of the day.

The Monarchs came out in the second half and Averett forward Stanley Abada broke through the Methodist defense to score in the 46th minute. Monteiro earned the hat trick on a header from senior Dustin Breckenridge. Senior defender Desmond Keane headed the fifth goal in on the assist from junior Mike DeMara before freshman Mauricio Londono capped off the scoring with a penalty kick with less than four minutes remaining.

The Monarchs out shot the Cougars 40-7 with Methodist goalkeepers Sean Brennan and Brock Ferguson combining for 4 saves. Averett goalkeeper Joe Dusewicz made 17 stops.

The Monarchs will travel to Rocky Mount on Saturday to face N.C. Wesleyan at 1 pm.
