White records hat trick as Monarchs roll past Chowan 11-0

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
The offensive struggles felt by the Methodist Monarch men’s soccer team were extinguished on Thursday as the Monarchs routed visiting Chowan 11-0 at Monarch Soccerplex. After starting the season 0-5-1, Methodist has now won three of its last four games, and the Monarchs have now won 10 straight head-to-head against former USA South Athletic Conference rival Chowan (1-9).

In addition, it was the second-most goals scored ever in a game by a Monarch team, and the Monarchs came within one goal of matching the school record for goals in a game. That was a 12-0 rout over Barton in 1988 bested the feat.

Many players contributed offensively for Methodist. Andy White spearheaded the attack with a hat trick, scoring all three goals in the first half as Methodist jumped out to a 7-0 lead. White, however, wasn’t alone. Freshmen Sean Gregory and Evan Monteiro both scored two goals, while Brandon Cunningham, Jimmy Izaguirre, Jamie Gunderson and Craig Tupper each scored once.

All three freshmen, Cunningham, Gunderson and Tupper each scored their first college goals, respectively. Monarch goalkeepers Jeremy Belnap, Chris Dykstra and Sean Brennan combined for the shutout with one save. Chowan goalkeeper Nick Anders recorded eight saves for the Braves.

Methodist returns to USA South action on Saturday with a huge showdown at 7 p.m. at Christopher Newport.
