Methodist Defeats Chowan 2-1
Senior Dustin Breckenridge scores the game-winning goal

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  After seven away games to open the season, the men's soccer team finally had a chance to play on their home field Wednesday afternoon. Chowan scored early, but the Monarchs prevailed to win 2-1. Methodist improves to 6-2 on the year while Chowan drops to 1-9.

Neither team had a solid opportunity on goal through the first 15 minutes of play. Chowan got on the scoreboard first in the 26th minute when Thomas Clay capitalized on a breakdown in the Methodist defense to hit the lower left corner. Less than two minutes later junior Jamie Gunderson assisted junior Sean Gregory on a header to tie the game.

The score remained tied until the 63rd minute when junior Mike DeMara flicked one on to senior Dustin Breckenridge who drove it to the back of the net for the game winning goal.

Methodist out shot Chowan 24-5. Senior Sean Brennan made one save for the Monarchs while Josh Cenci made seven stops for the Hawks.

The Monarchs will play host to Virginia Wesleyan Sunday at 3 pm.
