#3 Methodist Upsets #2 Christopher Newport 1-0
Junior Evan Monteiro scores the game-winning goal just before halftime

ROCKY MOUNT, NC-  Not even a month ago, the Methodist men's soccer team traveled to Christopher Newport and lost 1-0. The roles reversed in the USA South semifinal on Friday with the Monarchs taking the 1-0 win. The Monarchs move to 13-6-1 overall while Christopher Newport finishes at 11-7.

Through the first 40 minutes of the first half, Christopher Newport held a 5-2 shot advantage over Methodist, but had only placed one shot on goal with Methodist goalkeeper Sean Brennan picking up the save. With just over a minute to go in the half, junior Mike DeMara fed junior Evan Monteiro for the through ball for Monteiro to take a touch and score for the 1-0 lead. The half ended with the Monarchs holding the advantage.

Christopher Newport held a 6-4 lead in shots during the second half, but Brennan had four saves to preserve the shutout and help Methodist to the 1-0 win. The Captains' goalkeeper Matt Tengs had two saves.

With the win, Methodist advances to the USA South Tournament Championship on Saturday against #4 Greensboro at 2 pm.
