October 28, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Methodist men's soccer team finished the regular season on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Ferrum. The Monarchs move to 11-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the USA South while Ferrum moves to 3-11-1 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Methodist held the run of play early on and earned a corner kick in the 17th minute of play. Sophomore Bret Brennan took the kick and found junior Sean Gregory inside the eighteen-yard box who hit the ball inside for junior Mike DeMara to finish the shot past the Ferrum goalkeeper. The Monarchs held on for the 1-0 lead at halftime. Eight minutes into the second half, junior Jamie Gunderson received the ball on the left side and beat his defender before scoring the second goal of the game. Less than three minutes later, Gunderson had the ball inside the eighteen and drew the goalkeeper out before slipping the ball through to Brennan to finish for the 3-0 lead. Ferrum's Scott Minton prevented the shutout on a shot that ricocheted in for a Ferrum goal. Methodist goalkeeper Sean Brennan finished with three saves while Ferrum's Chris Taylor made nine stops for the Panthers. Prior to the game the Methodist seniors, C.J. Komons, Andy White, Desmond Keane, Dustin Breckenridge, and Sean Brennan were honored in their final regular season home game. Junior Max Adler was also recognized as he will graduate prior to completing his athletic eligibility. With the win, the Monarchs tied for third in the USA South and won a coin toss to serve as the number three seed in the USA South Tournament. Ferrum will return to Methodist on Tuesday for a first round game at 2:30 pm. |
