First half goal gives Methodist 1-0 victory over Francis Marion

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
The Methodist Monarch men’s soccer team appears to be picking up steam at the right time in the 2005 season. After knocking off Shenandoah on Saturday, the Monarchs returned home on Tuesday and won a 1-0 thriller over visiting NCAA Division II Francis Marion at Monarch SoccerPlex.

Methodist has now won two straight and three of its last four. The Monarchs improved to 5-7-1 overall.

The game’s lone goal occurred right before the end of the first half. Gregg Cohen scored off a cross pass from Steven Brumbaugh in the 41st minute. In the second half, the Monarch defense stymied the Patriots behind the stellar play of defenders Jimmy Izaguirre, Richard Distad, Desmond Keane and Chris MacDonald.

Methodist goalkeeper Jeremy Belnap recorded the shutout with six saves. Jonathan Runion recorded one save for Francis Marion (7-8).

The Monarchs play host to Randolph-Macon on Thursday at 4 p.m.
