Monarchs
drop 1-0
double-overtime
heartbreaker
against
rival
Greensboro
FAYETTEVILLE,
N.C. –
The
long-standing
men’s
soccer
rivalry
between
Methodist
and
Greensboro
was
renewed
on
Tuesday,
and it
wasn’t a
happy
renewal
for
Methodist.
The
Monarchs
dropped
a tough
1-0
heartbreaker
in
double-overtime
against
Pride in
a battle
for
second
place in
the USA
South
Athletic
Conference
at
Monarch
Soccerplex.
The
defeat
drops
Methodist
to
5-10-1
overall
and 2-2
in the
USA
South.
Both
teams
had
numerous
opportunities
in
regulation
to
score,
but the
defenses
on both
sides
stood
stern.
Midway
through
the
second
overtime,
however,
Greensboro
(8-5-2,
5-1) was
awarded
a corner
kick. A
Monarch
header
off the
corner
kick
went out
to near
midfield
where
the
Pride’s
Charlie
Rierson
was
waiting.
Rierson
fed Eric
Hatchett
streaking
down the
right
side,
and
Hatchett
scored
the
game-winner
past
Methodist
goalkeeper
Chris
Dykstra
from 13
yards
out
inside
the
penalty
box.
Dykstra
recorded
five
saves
for
Methodist,
as did
his
Greensboro
counterpart
Matt
Brown.
Methodist
plays
its
final
home
game of
the 2005
season
on
Saturday
against
Ferrum
at 3
p.m.
