Monarch offense stymied in 3-0 defeat at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. –
It was another case of offensive bad luck for the Methodist Monarch men’s soccer team on Wednesday as the Monarchs fell 3-0 at Hampden-Sydney in a non-conference clash. The defeat drops Methodist to 3-7-1 overall.

The score was deceiving considering Methodist out-shot Hampden-Sydney 15-6 and had seven shots on goal to the Tigers’ six. However, Hampden-Sydney goalkeeper Pierce Buckingham was the Monarchs’ nemesis with seven saves.

Hampden-Sydney took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute as Bobby Hillman scored off an assist by Robert Baybutt. With the 1-0 lead at halftime, the Tigers scored their two second half goals on penalty kicks. Grant Dickens scored both – the first in the 48th minute and the second in the 70th minute.

Methodist goalkeeper Chris Dykstra recorded two saves for the Monarchs.

Methodist returns to USA South Athletic Conference action on Saturday, traveling to Shenandoah for a 1 p.m. game.
