Athletic Department Announces Scholar Athletes of the Year

Stephen Fox and Sara Poling honored with highest academic honors
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.- 
Each year, the Methodist Department of Athletics honors the male and female student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade point average.  Men's soccer player, Stephen Fox will receive the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award.  Softball player Sara Poling has been named the Female Scholar Athletes of the Year for the second consecutive year. release

Methodist Falls to Greensboro 2-0
Senior goalkeeper Sean Brennan earns All-Tournament honors
ROCKY MOUNT, NC-  After a 2-2 tie on October 25, Methodist and Greensboro started over Saturday afternoon in the USA South Tournament Final. Greensboro used a goal late in each half to take the 2-0 win and earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Monarchs move to 13-7-1 overall while Greensboro stands at 13-4-3. release

Junior Evan Monteiro scores the game-winning goal just before halftime
ROCKY MOUNT, NC-  Not even a month ago, the Methodist men's soccer team traveled to Christopher Newport and lost 1-0. The roles reversed in the USA South semifinal on Friday with the Monarchs taking the 1-0 win. The Monarchs move to 13-6-1 overall while Christopher Newport finishes at 11-7. release

USA South Names All-Conference Men's Soccer Teams
Sophomore Bret Brennan receives Second Team honors
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for men's soccer. A total of 38 student-athletes have been named to the USA South All-Conference teams. The Monarchs received six All-Conference honors. release

Methodist Shuts Out Ferrum for First Round Win
Junior Jamie Gunderson earns a goal and an assist
FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Monarchs knocked off Ferrum for the second time in three days to advance to the semifinals of the USA South Men's Soccer Tournament. The Monarchs move to 12-6-1 overall while Ferrum finishes 4-12-1. release

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Methodist men's soccer team finished the regular season on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Ferrum. The Monarchs move to 11-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the USA South while Ferrum moves to 3-11-1 overall and 1-5 in the conference. release

Freshman Murray Williamson scored the first goal of the game
FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Monarchs scored two goals in the first thirteen minutes of the game, but Greensboro tied it up in the second half. The game went into two overtime periods, with neither team able to break the tie. With the tie, the Monarchs move to 10-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the USA South while Greensboro moves to 10-4-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference. release

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  Methodist used two goals in the first half to cruise to a 2-0 win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday. With the win, the Monarchs move to 10-6 overall while Randolph-Macon drops to 7-9 this year. release

WASHINGTON, DC-  The Monarchs traveled up to Washington, D.C. to take on the Gallaudet Bison on Saturday. The Monarchs rode a 4-0 halftime lead to a 5-0 win. The Monarchs move to 9-6 overall while Gallaudet stands at 0-14 this season. release

WINCHESTER, VA-  The Methodist men's soccer team prevented overtime with a goal in the 90th minute to defeat Shenandoah 2-1 on Friday afternoon. The Monarchs move to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in the USA South while Shenandoah drops to 3-13 this year and 0-4 in the conference. release

Lynchburg Upends Methodist 2-0
Hornets out shot Monarchs 18-5

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  Methodist stepped out of conference play on Tuesday to face Lynchburg College, ranked 10th in the South region. The Hornets slipped one in early and went on to win 2-0. Methodist moves to 7-6 on the year while Lynchburg improves to 8-4-1 overall. release

Senior C.J. Komons' takes free kick in final seconds in a chance to tie the game
NEWPORT NEWS, VA-  The Monarchs traveled to Christopher Newport University on Saturday in USA South play. The Captains scored first and the Monarchs could not find the tying goal, giving Christopher Newport the 1-0 win. Methodist moves to 7-5 on the year and 1-2 in the conference while Christopher Newport is 8-4 overall and 4-0 in the USA South. release

ROCKY MOUNT, NC-  The Methodist men's soccer team traveled to Rocky Mount on Saturday to take on the 9th ranked N.C. Wesleyan Bishops. The Monarchs registered eight shots with three on goal, but the Bishops prevailed 2-0. Methodist moves to 7-4 on the year and 1-1 in the conference while N.C. Wesleyan improves to 10-0 this season and 2-0 in the USA South. release

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Monarchs opened USA South Conference play on Wednesday with a 6-1 win over the Averett Cougars. Methodist opened the scoring early took a 3-0 lead at the half. Methodist moves to 7-3 on the year and 1-0 in the conference while Averett falls to 4-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the USA South. release

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  After seven away games to open the season, the men's soccer team finally had a chance to play on their home field Wednesday afternoon. Chowan scored early, but the Monarchs prevailed to win 2-1. Methodist improves to 6-2 on the year while Chowan drops to 1-9. release

Monarchs Fall to Southwestern
Junior Sean Gregory returns home to face his father, Southwestern head coach
GEORGETOWN, TX-  After a Methodist 3-2 win over Southwestern last year in Fayetteville, the Monarchs agreed to a return trip in 2007 for junior midfielder Sean Gregory to face his father, the head coach of Southwestern in his hometown of Georgetown, Texas. The Pirates came back to even the tally with a 2-0 win on Saturday. release

SAN ANTONIO, TX-  The Monarchs traveled to Texas on Thursday for a match up with the number one team in the country on Friday night. Trinity struck early and went on to win 6-1. Methodist falls to 5-1 while Trinity stands at 5-0. release

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Methodist University men's soccer team has been ranked 7th in the South Region for Division III by NSCAA/adidas. The Monarchs move up a spot in the second week of the season. release

GREENSBORO, NC-  Methodist added another win to their record on a Sunday with a 6-1 victory over Lasell. The team finished second in the Doug Hamilton Memorial Tournament behind host Greensboro due to goal differential. Methodist improves to 4-0 on the year while Lasell falls to 1-3. release

ROCKY MOUNT, NC-  Randolph College opened the scoring in the ninth minute of play, but the Monarchs would counter with two goals to earn their second win of the season. Both host N.C. Wesleyan and Methodist finished 2-0 in the N.C. Wesleyan Fall Classic. The Monarchs move to 2-0 on the season while Randolph falls to 0-2. release

ROCKY MOUNT, NC-  The Monarchs offense poured in on Saturday with the 7-1 victory over Mt. St. Vincent in the first game of the N.C. Wesleyan Fall Classic. Methodist took a 3-0 lead at halftime before finishing with four additional goals in the second half. The Monarchs start the season 1-0 while Mt. St. Vincent falls to 0-1. release

Monarchs to kick off season Sept. 1
FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The Methodist men's soccer team returns 16 players from a roster that finished the 2006 season 14-5-1. During the season the team carried a 10-game winning streak and were ranked as high as sixth in the South region while advancing to the USA South semifinals. A host of newcomers will join the Monarchs on their quest for a 2007 USA South Conference Championship. release

FAYETTEVILLE, NC-  The USA South Conference office released the preseason polls today for cross country, soccer and volleyball. The polls are based on votes from each conference member's head coach without voting for themselves. release
