victory
of 2005
season
FAYETTEVILLE,
N.C. –
Methodist
men’s
soccer
coach
Justin
Terranova
knew he
would
depend
on a few
freshmen
this
2005
season,
and on
Saturday,
two of
those
freshmen
came to
the
forefront.
With
Evan
Monteiro
scoring
twice
and Sean
Gregory
adding
another
goal,
the
Monarchs
broke
through
for
their
first
victory
of the
season
with a
4-2
victory
over
visiting
Piedmont
at
Monarch
Soccerplex.
Methodist
is now
1-5-1
overall
on the
season.
The goal
output
was the
highest
in a
game yet
this
season
for the
Monarchs,
who have
struggled
offensively
in
recent
games.
Methodist
raced
out to a
1-0 lead
in the
ninth
minute
as
Monteiro
scored
his
first
collegiate
goal on
an
assist
by
Gregory,
and then
Andrew
Neff
gave the
Monarchs
a 2-0
lead in
the 11th
minute
off a
corner
kick by
Gregg
Cohen.
Piedmont
trimmed
the lead
to 2-1
on a
Monarch
on-goal
in the
14th
minute,
the
Monarchs
answered
with
Monteiro’s
second
goal in
the 18th
minute
off an
assist
by Neff.
That
gave
Methodist
a 3-1
lead at
halftime.
The
Lions
cut the
Methodist
lead to
3-2 in
the 55th
on a
Drew
Griffin
goal,
but
Methodist
responded
on the
first
collegiate
goal by
Gregory
in the
82nd
minute
on an
assist
by Adam
Sippy.
Methodist
opens
USA
South
Athletic
Conference
