Second Half surge carries Randolph-Macon past Monarchs 3-1

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –
After a sterling first half on Thursday, the Methodist Monarch men’s soccer team couldn’t overcome the sting of the Yellow Jackets from Randolph-Macon in the second half. Paced by all three goals in the second half, Randolph-Macon overtook the Monarchs 3-1 at Monarch Soccerplex.

The defeat drops Methodist to 5-8-1 overall.

After a scoreless first half, Randolph-Macon turned up the juice early in the second half.

The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Matthew Garofalo off an assist by Greg Ridout. Seven minutes later, Ridout scored on a breakaway off an assist by Alex Depcrynski, and then Pete Hanley gave Randolph-Macon a 3-0 lead with a goal in the 58th minute from an assist by Garafalo.

Methodist broke the ice in the 64th minute on a goal by Max Adler off a direct kick by Andrew Neff. Both Methodist goalkeeper Jeremy Belnap and his Randolph-Macon counterpart Nick Warner recorded two saves.

Methodist returns to USA South Athletic Conference action on Sunday with a key showdown at North Carolina Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
