Penalty kick propels Methodist to 2-1 USA South victory at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. –
Aiming to keep some needed momentum in the race for the USA South Athletic Conference men’s soccer championship, the Methodist Monarchs picked up their first road victory of the 2005 season on Saturday with a thrilling 2-1 victory at Shenandoah. The victory lifts Methodist to 4-7-1 overall, but also 2-0 in the USA South.

The Monarchs trailed 1-0 at halftime when Shenandoah’s William Phouminh scored in the 44th minute off an assist by Jace Kenny. However, Methodist tied the game in the 63rd minute when Chris MacDonald hammered in a 20-yard shot off the cross bar for the goal.

Four minutes later, the Monarchs’ Jimmy Izaguirre scored what proved to be the game-winner on a penalty kick. It was Izaguirre’s second penalty kick goal of the season. Methodist goalkeeper Jeremy Belnap recorded two saves in the victory.

Methodist plays host to NCAA Division II Francis Marion on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
