April 7, 2007 FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs battled out a 8-1 win over Oglethorpe Saturday morning before coming back and defeating conference rival Christopher Newport 6-3. With the win, the Monarchs are tied for first with CNU and Averett. The Monarchs improve to 8-8 overall and 5-1 in the USA South. Oglethorpe is 8-6 overall while Christopher Newport is 12-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The Monarchs swept doubles against Oglethorpe to start 3-0. Senior Mike Layton (No. 2), freshman Andrew Freeman (No. 3), senior David Hardy (No. 4), junior Louis Cisti (No. 5), and junior Matthew Siegel (No. 6) finished up with wins at singles to earn the 8-1 win over the 14th regionally ranked Petrels. The Monarchs needed a win against Christopher Newport to stay in the hunt for first place in the conference. Hardy and Freeman combined to win at number two doubles while Layton and Siegel won at number three to hold a 2-1 advantage going into singles. Senior Chris Fletcher gave the Monarchs a 3-1 lead winning his number one singles match quickly in two sets. Siegel won at number six and Cisti gave the Monarchs the win with a victory at number five. Hardy rounded things off with a win at number four. The Monarchs will compete in the USA South Conference Tournament from April 13-15 in Burlington, NC. |
