Monarchs Shut Out Greensboro 9-0
Freshman Matthew Taylor won 6-0, 6-0 at number three singles

FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Monarchs opened USA South play with a satisfying 9-0 win over Greensboro College on Tuesday. Methodist moves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the USA South.

Methodist opened with a sweep of the doubles competition. Recently ranked fifth in the region by the ITA, senior Chris Fletcher and freshman Matthew Taylor won 8-1 at number one doubles. Freshman Tariq Sheikh and sophomore Jarrod Bogard won 8-2 at number two before sophomore Dylan Knox and Rob Currier prevailed 9-7 at number three.

Ranked fifth in the region for singles, Fletcher defeated fourth ranked David Sutton 7-5, 6-2 at number one. Sheikh won 6-2, 6-0 at number two and Taylor played number three to get the shutout at 6-0, 6-0. Knox won 6-1, 6-0 and Bogard won 6-1, 6-1 at four and five respectively. Freshman Steven Burkett faced off in the final singles match with the Monarchs hoping to preserve the shutout. Burkett lost the first set 4-6 but came back and won the second set 6-4. In a super tiebreaker Burkett's final serve went unreturned for the 12-10 victory.

Methodist will travel to Averett on Saturday for a 1 pm match.
