March 21, 2008 GREENSBORO, NC- Methodist took an early 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches, but won just one singles match for Guilford to take the 5-4 win on Thursday. Methodist moves to 2-5 overall while Guilford stands at 4-3 this season. Methodist started strong taking all three doubles matches over the Quakers. Senior Chris Fletcher and freshman Matthew Taylor won 8-3 at number one doubles and freshman Tariq Sheikh and sophomore Jarrod Bogard won 9-7 at number two. Sophomore Dylan Knox and junior Rob Currier won number three doubles 8-5 to complete the sweep. Fletcher made easy work of things at number one singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win but Guilford went on to win the five remaining singles matches. The Monarchs pushed three of them to third sets, but Guilford held on for the team victory. Sheikh lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at number two and Taylor lost 6-1, 7-5 at number three. Knox lost 6-1, 6-3 at number four and Bogard came up just short 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 at number five. Freshman Steven Burkett lost 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 at number six. Methodist will travel to Averett on Saturday for a 1 pm match. |
