April 13, 2008 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Monarchs were down by three after doubles and tried to win the necessary five singles matches to win the team match, but Roanoke prevailed 6-3. Methodist moves to 7-8 overall while Roanoke is 11-7 this season. Roanoke took the 3-0 lead with a sweep at doubles to open the match. Senior Chris Fletcher and freshman Matthew Taylor lost 8-6 and sophomore Jarrod Bogard and freshman Tariq Sheikh lost 8-4 at number two. Sophomore Dylan Knox and junior Rob Currier took an 8-6 loss at number three. Fletcher gave the Monarchs their first point with a 6-1, 6-3 win at number one singles. Taylor won the tiebreaker in the second set to win the number three singles 6-1, 7-6 (4) while Bogard lost at number five 6-3, 6-1. Knox picked up another win for Methodist at number four 7-5, 6-1 but Roanoke finished with wins at number two and six singles to secure the 6-3 win. Sheikh lost 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 while freshman Justin Campbell lost 7-6, 6-7, 6-2. The Monarchs will face Shenandoah on Friday in the first round of the USA South Tournament in Burlington, NC at 1 pm. |
